India has always been very rich in sculptures and artisans. In olden times, there were many skilful workers who use to make leather shoes and footwear by using simple equipment. They did not possess any state of the art machinery and did not have any formal education in this field. There are still many villages where men often known as cobblers are engaged in making footwear and are earning their livelihood. However times have changed and there is a greater demand of footwear both in India as well as abroad. Keeping in mind the increasing demand for leather good the ministry of commerce has envisages a great potential in the footwear industry. It has been found out that currently China is the world leader in producing footwear and is leading in export of leather goods. India has realised a potential in the field of leather goods and want to supersede China as far as exports of leather goods and footwear is concerned.
